Ladies From Hell Reigns In Western Fair Preferred

Ladies From Hell went coast-to-coast in the $12,000 Fillies and Mares Preferred Handicap Pace at The Raceway at Western Fair District on Wednesday, April 9.

Affectionately nicknamed “The Queen of London,” the 11-year-old veteran took full advantage of a reduced field of five, following two scratches. Sent off as the even-money favourite, she blasted off the gate and grabbed the early lead, clicking off a sharp opening quarter in :27.1 and reaching the half in :57.

Caughtstealinghome (Anthony Haughan) came first over to challenge, and the pair separated from the rest of the field, creating a two-horse breakaway, clocking a time of 1:25.4 at the three-quarter pole. But Caughtstealinghome couldn’t sustain the pressure, and Ladies From Hell drew clear in the stretch to win decisively in 1:55.2 by 3-3/4 lengths, living up to her title as Western Fair’s reigning Aged Pacing Mare of the Year. Saulsbrook Olympia (Tyler Borth) closed well to take second, while a tiring Caughtstealinghome held on for third.

Trained and co-owned by Mike Sumner, Ladies From Hell earned the 51st win of her career, boosting her lifetime earnings to $332,231. The daughter of Classic Card Shark-Jennys Place picked up her fifth win from 10 starts this season, including her third Preferred-level victory, bringing her 2025 earnings to $37,370 for trainer Sumner and co-owner Shae Sumner of London, Ont.
